Drive from Auckland to Waitomo (2.5hrs, 195km) to explore its glowworm caves. Then head to Matamata

Rotorua
Rotorua’s geothermal landscape features steam vents, geysers, mud pools, and native forests, steeped in Maori myths. Visit a local geothermal site, including the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, Kiwi Conservation Centre, and geothermal valley. Enjoy a Hangi Dinner with a cultural performance, finishing with hot chocolate and pudding on the geyser terrace.

Rotorua – Napier
Drive from Rotorua to Napier (3hrs, 220km), passing volcanic landscapes, forests, rugged hills, and scenic plains. After the 1931 earthquake, Napier was rebuilt in Art Deco style with Maori motifs, creating a unique
blend of New Zealand character. Enjoy a guided tour of Napier’s 1930s architecture and history.

Napier – Wellington
Today’s travel south may be via the spectacular Manawatu Gorge or through the beautiful Tuki Tuki Valley and Wairarapa Wine region to reach Wellington. Set between a sparking harbour and rolling green hills the compact city of Wellington is best explored on foot. Great shopping, arts culture, cafes and restaurants are all within minutes of the city’s untouched nature spots. Te Papa, New Zealand’s National Museum offers FREE admission but you might like to include a guided tour for a greater insight into New Zealand’s rich history and culture. Wellington – Picton – Blenheim
Ferry from Wellington to Picton, crossing the scenic Cook Strait and Marlborough Sounds. Marlborough offers stunning beaches, mountains, and vineyards. A short 30-minute drive (30km) takes you to the town of Blenheim.

Blenheim – Kaikoura – Christchurch
Drive from Blenheim to Christchurch (4hrs, 309km) along the stunning Pacific Coast Road, with mountains on one side and the wild ocean on the other. Stop in Kaikoura, known for its marine life, including Sperm Whales. Continue to Christchurch, a vibrant city with parks, gardens, and the Avon River.

Kaikoura is New Zealand’s whale-watching capital, with around 80% of the world’s whale and dolphin
